Ascension Lutheran Church is partnering with comic book artist Louis Small Jr. of Wilson for a mini comicon as a community outreach opportunity called Free Comic Book Weekend.
The event is Friday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held on the campus of Ascension Lutheran Church, 2512 Nash St., Wilson.
Vendor displays, local artists and writers sharing their wares and free comic books provided by one of the sponsors, Arkham Comix, will fill the main hall.
There will be a lounge for creative conversations, a video room for anime, and a place to highlight manga art.
There will also be food and drink available on site.
In addition, there will be a raffle for various geek-related items, the opportunity for cosplay (dressing up as your favorite genre character) with a grand finale contest, and various discussions and panels including several “how-to-draw” opportunities led by Small.
On Sunday morning, there will be a special worship service themed to comics/science fiction utilizing the images, language and metaphors common to these many multi-verses in order to recognize and give thanks for the very gift of the creativity behind everything shared.
“It will be a great time to see how many and various the gifts are that God has given the creative folks of the world and to show how very readily they can be used to illustrate the good news that God has given each and every person through word, image and conversation,” said church pastor, Zach Harris.
