A pair of impressive victories to start the season for SouthWest Edgecombe impressed the voters in the season’s first high school football poll by The Associated Press. The Cougars earned 36 points to land in sixth place in the 2-A poll after whipping South Central 62-27 on Wednesday, following their season-opening 54-14 thumping of North Edgecombe on Aug. 29.
Despite winning all three of its games by a combined 160-42 score, Southern Nash could not crack the 3-A top 10. The Firebirds collected 16 votes, tying them with Statesville and Greensboro Dudley and just two fewer than 10th-place Kannapolis Brown.
Charlotte Myers Park (2-0) picked up five first-place votes to claim the 4-A hot seat while Weddington received seven of the 11 first-places votes in the 3-A poll. Reidsville narrowly usurped Shelby for the 2-A pole position while Tarboro resumed its perch atop the 1-A rankings.
