ROCKY MOUNT — Fike managed to hang with host Rocky Mount in the first quarter of Friday’s 3-A Big East Conference varsity football meeting, but the Gryphons effectively pushed the Golden Demons aside with 21 second-quarter points on the way to a 42-21.
It was the third straight loss in Big East play for Fike, which dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference games. The Gryphons, 3-0 in the Big East, will take a 7-0 record into next Friday’s showdown with state No. 5-ranked Southern Nash (6-0, 3-0).
“We did some really good stuff offensively,” said Fike head coach Tom Nelson. “We moved the ball. We were close down at the end of the first half but didn’t get in.
“We’re just having trouble getting teams off the field and having trouble scoring enough to keep up.”
After the Gryphons scored a touchdown in the first quarter, the Demons evened the score on junior Aaron Bancroft’s 1-yard TD plunge and the extra-point kick by senior Josh Avery early in the second quarter.
However, the Gryphons answered with a scoring drive and then recovered an onside kick, setting up Rocky Mount’s third rushing TD.
Cody Cooper-Speight ran in a 3-yard TD to trim the margin to 21-14 but Rocky Mount scored again just before halftime.
Bancroft added a 3-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Fike will host Northern Nash next Friday night at Buddy Bedgood Stadium.
