CLAYTON — The Fike High varsity football team took a 3-0 lead after one quarter, but host Clayton erupted for three TDs in the second period to claim a 28-10 nonconference triumph Friday night.
Fike of the 3-A Big East Conference fell to 3-2, while Clayton, now a representative of the 3-A Greater Neuse River Conference after moving down from the 4-A ranks this year, stayed unbeaten at 5-0 with its smallest margin of victory all season.
The Demons led early, using a 22-yard field goal from senior kicker John Gliarmis on their opening possession to take the early lead. However, Clayton, which overcome a pair of fumbles, stormed ahead with three second-quarter TDs.
The Comets, who 14 first downsto nine for the Demons, completed 12 of 16 passes for 239 yards and ran for 104. Fike accumulated 115 yards on 37 carries.
Clayton overcome 80 yards in penalties on eight flags while the Demons were just hit four times for 25 yards.
Junior backup quarterback Josh Avery scored on a 6-yard run with 66 seconds left to cap the scoring. Senior quarterback Jaelynn Melton, who was 3 for 9 for 54 yards with an interception, injured his ankle late in the third quarter and did not return.
Fike’s rushing attack was led by junior Cody Cooper-Speight, who supplied 76 yards on 15 rushes.
The Demons conclude their nonconference schedule Friday with a trip to Erwin to face another Greater Neuse River Conference team in Triton.
