More than two dozen suspects face criminal charges after the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office conducted Operation Opioid Prevention and Street Safety last week.

The operation “targeted individuals for selling illegal narcotics including heroin, prescription narcotics, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana throughout Wilson County,” sheriff’s office Chief of Staff Wanda Samuel said in a news release.

Operation OPSS also consisted of license checkpoints to improve road safety, officials said. Checking stations were established in each of the four zones throughout Wilson County. Deputies issued traffic citations throughout the operation including eight for expired registrations; seven for fictitious tags; five for having no operator’s license; 10 for driving while license revoked; and two for expired vehicle inspection. Deputies served five outstanding warrants and one order for failure to pay child support.

“The sheriff’s office will not allow drugs to break the expectations that we have for our youth and our communities,” Sheriff Calvin Woodard said in a written statement. “In addition, traffic fatalities by drivers with no insurance and/or license is horrific when that family has no recourse (other than an arrest) to follow as they mourn for a seriously injured loved one. When choices can be made to utilize good moral character, dealers should think of their families and how this poison can contribute to gangs, thefts and even death.”

As the operation formed, Woodard said investigators presented some cases to the U.S. attorney’s office and were able to place three suspects in federal custody.

“If drug dealers can overlook the traumatic affect this poison would be ‘if it was their families,’ but still promote their business, then this office will continuously oppose their views and work tirelessly to shut them down as well as arrest anyone who decides to bring it across these county lines into our communities,” Woodard said.
