Oct. 19, 1922 — March 14, 2017 Emma Ruth Burden Barnes, 94, of Friends Homes at Guilford, Greensboro, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017. A celebration-of-life service will be held in the Woolman Hall Living Room at Friends Homes at Guilford at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, with Rev. Kelley Groce of Centenary United Methodist Church officiating. Members of the Friends Homes community may visit with the family in the Living Room from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Additionally, the family will receive friends from 4-5 p.m., also on Sunday, at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service Guilford Chapel, 5926 W. Friendly Ave. Interment will be 1 p.m. the next day, Monday, March 20, at Maplewood Cemetery, 400 College St. NE, in Wilson, with the Rev. Doug Murray of First Baptist Church of Wilson officiating. Mrs. Barnes was born in Wilson, North Carolina on Oct. 19, 1922. She graduated from Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson. She worked in administration in the Hertford County Public Schools until moving to Greensboro in 1969. She worked in administration with the Greensboro Public Schools from 1969 to her retirement. She was a member of the Greensboro Anniversary Garden Club, the Greensboro Women’s Club and the United Methodist Women at Centenary United Methodist Church. Over the years, Mrs. Barnes held a variety of leadership roles with these organizations at both the local and district levels. Since 2008, Mrs. Barnes was delighted to be a resident among the warm and caring community at Friends Homes at Guilford. Mrs. Barnes was an avid bridge player and loved to garden. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gray “Tince” Barnes; two brothers, William (Bill) and George; and two sisters, India and Nina. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sandie and Selby Bateman of Leland, North Carolina; and a number of loving nieces and nephews.
