Dylan Ward fired a four-hit shutout to cap a doubleheader sweep for the Barton College baseball team over Glenville State (West Virginia) College in Friday’s home openers for the Bulldogs at Nixon Field.

Barton won the first game 8-3 behind a strong effort from starting pitcher Trent Fennell for the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Bulldogs’ first win of 2018 and first victory under new head coach Jim Chester.

Ward’s gem finished off the Div. II Mountain East Conference Pioneers, playing their first games, 6-0 in the second of two seven-inning contests.

Ward (1-1), a junior right-hander, walked one batter and struck out seven as he faced just 27 Pioneer hitters. He got all the runs he would need in the bottom of the first inning as the Bulldogs touched Glenville State starter Wesley Stauffer (0-1) for three runs on four walks, two errors and no hits. Colby Warren walked with the bases loaded to bring in Barton’s first run before Mason Cooper delivered a sacrifice fly to score Gatlin Pate, who reached on an infield error. Riker then scored from third on an error by Pioneers second baseman Zach Bacon.

Riker, who went 5 for 6 in the two games, singled in junior center fielder Troy Maslowski in the bottom of the second before Pate’s two-out, two-run home run over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the fourth completed the scoring. It was also the last hit of the game for Barton, which ended with four hits.

In the first game, Riker gave the Bulldogs the early lead when his single to center scored Pate in the bottom of the first. After the Pioneers tagged Fennell for a run in the top of the third, Barton answerd with Pate’s two-run double following a single by Ricks Dearing and a double off the bat of Maslowski.

Riker had an RBI single in Barton’s two-run fourth before the Bulldogs broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Charlie Horne, Dearing and Riker.

Fennell gave up two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out eight in six innings.

The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon.
