Junior Logan Adkins remained perfect at No. 1 singles on the season as she helped her Fike High girls tennis do the same Tuesday in the Lady Demons’ 5-4 triumph at Washington.

The win, coupled with Fike’s 8-1 victory at Croatan on Friday, Aug. 24, boosted the Lady Demons’ record to 6-0 on the season. Adkins also moved to 6-0 with an 8-2 win over Washington’s Claire Shepherd at No. 1 singles before teaming with Anna Blair Thomas for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.

The singles matches were contested in a pro-set format due to a late start and the heat, Fike head coach Lee Matthews said.

“Washington proved to be tenacious, and the match was much closer than we expected,” he said. “The heat may have been a factor in a couple of matches.

“The odds were definitely with us; we won all the odd-numbered matches!”

Thomas and Mia Hamblin each won in singles, at Nos. 3 and 5 respectively, while Hamblin teamed with Cappa Hill to claim victory at No. 3 doubles.

The loss was Washington’s first in three outings. Fike will start 3-A Big East Conference play Tuesday, Sept. 4, at home against Southern Nash.
