DURHAM —The third time was enough for varsity football teams from Fike High and Northern Durham on Friday night.

Following two previous stoppages for lightning, the season-opening game was halted in the third quarter with Fike leading 28-25 and the ball resting on Northern Durham’s 13-yard-line.

Fike will resume play with possession. However, a make-up date had not been determined by press deadline for the Times.

The Golden Demons forced three turnovers before the stoppage, two coming from Zach Pittman. Justin Daniels returned an interception for a touchdown to overcome an early sluggish start for the Golden Demons. Fike fell down 13-0 before Daniels’ pick-six put the Demons on the board. Later, quarterback Jaelynn Melton found wide receiver Brandon Atkinson on a 23-yard scoring strike, giving Fike the lead at 14-13.

Northern Durham countered with an 80-yard scoring play before Melton departed with an injury. The first delay came with 8 minutes, 31 seconds left in the first half.
