The Southern Nash football team is in a holding pattern and that’s a good thing for the Firebirds, who remained No. 5 for the third straight week in The Associated Press 3-A rankings.
Southern Nash, which handed visiting Fike a 63-41 loss in the 3-A Big East Conference opener for both teams Friday at Firebird Stadium, stands 5-0.
There was very little change in the 3-A rankings with the top six positions holding still. Havelock (5-0), which collected seven of 10 first-place votes, remained No. 1, followed by Charlotte Catholic (6-1), Jacksonville (4-0), Gastonia Huss (7-0), Southern Nash and Weddington (6-1).
Charlotte Catholic and Charlotte Christian (6-0), which rose a spot to No. 7, are the only two other teams to get a first-place vote. Shelby Crest (6-1), Watauga County (7-0) and Central Cabarrus (7-0), making its poll debut, were Nos. 8-10, respectively.
Northwest Cabarrus received 10 points but it wasn’t enough to break into the top 10 in the 3-A poll.
Southern Nash will visit Northern Nash on Friday in week 2 of Big East play.
There was no change at the tops of the other three polls with 4-A Wake Forest (6-0), 2-A Lenoir Hibriten (7-0) and 1-A Tarboro (7-0) all remaining atop their respective rankings.
Nine newspapers, including The Wilson Times, voted in the poll this week.
