ROCKY MOUNT — Conservative pundit and former congressman Allen West will headline the Nash County Republican Party’s summer rally scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at Nash Community College’s Brown Auditorium.
West, a Fox News contributor and retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who represented a Florida congressional district that includes Fort Lauderdale from 2011-13, is a prominent conservative commentator and the author of “Guardian of the Republic.” Upon his election in 2010, West became the first African-American Republican to represent Florida in the U.S. House since 1876.
“We’re so excited to be bringing Allen West to Rocky Mount,” Wayne Outlaw, vice chairman of the Nash County Board of Commissioners, said in a news release. “Col. West represents the kind of values and ideals that have made America great. We welcome all Nash County citizens to hear his message.”
The summer rally will also feature local Republican candidates including state Sen. Rick Horner of Bailey, who is seeking re-election in Senate District 11; Lisa Barnes, a Nash County commissioner running for N.C. House District 7; John Check, candidate for state House District 25; and county commissioner candidate Bruce Berry.
“I’m so grateful to have Allen West’s support,” Check said. “The world needs more strong, outspoken voices like his.”
In addition to his frequent television appearances and radio interviews, West serves as executive director of the National Center for Policy Analysis and is a political columnist and blogger.
West, who now lives in Texas, told Fox News Radio guest host Monica Crowley last month that he is considering a run for office “after this election cycle,” teeing up a possible 2020 congressional campaign.
The summer rally includes a barbecue and chicken dinner. Advance tickets are available for $20 and can be ordered online at allenwestrally.eventbrite.com. Admission will be $25 at the door.
