Furious comeback lifts NJ to 27-26 win over SE Halifax

HALIFAX — Trailing by two TDs after the first play of the fourth quarter, the North Johnston High varsity football team cut its deficit to a single possession, recovered an onside kick and scored the game-winning touchdown with 47 seconds to go to stage a come-from-behind 27-26 win at Southeast Halifax on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

The 2-A Eastern Plains Conference Panthers fell down 26-13 with five second elapsed in the fourth quarter, but denied the two-point conversion attempt. North Johnston trailed 20-10 at the half against the 1-A Tar Roanoke Conference Trojans and converted a field goal to make it a one-possession game entering the fourth.

North Johnston recovered a pair of onside kicks in the second half, one to open the third quarter and another after closing to within 26-20, setting up the last-minute TD drive.

The Panthers host former 1-A Carolina Conference mate Rosewood next Friday.
