Greenfield sweeps CPIC swimming championships

WINTERVILLE — On the strength of four first-place finishes in the girls division and three more in the boys ranks, both Greenfield School swim teams captured their respective 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference championships Saturday at Winterville’s Aquaventure.

The Knights outpointed Wayne Country Day 118-95 to win the boys’ team title, while the Lady Knights, with 111 points, finished 28 points clear of host Greenville Pope John Paul II. Wayne Christian (72) and Wayne Country Day (35) rounded out the field in the girls’ competition, while Pope John Paul was third in the boys’ standings with 74. Wayne Christian was a distant fourth with 29.

Greenfield, coached by Rebecca Thompson, was paced by Grayson Buchanan in the 200-yard freestyle and Luke Flaherty in the 50 freestyle. Buchanan was first in the 200, touching the wall in a time of 2:32.21. Flaherty prevailed in the 50 freestyle, sprinting to a mark of 25.98.

Buchanan contributed to Greenfield’s championship 4x400 freestyle relay team alongside Thomas Stronach, RJ. Shealy and Cole Wainwright. The quarter traversed the distance in 4:59.60.

Riley Jennings had a hand in four second-place showings for Greenfield’s boys, getting individual runner-up swims in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. He combined with Luke Flaherty, Jake Flaherty and Patrick Smith to finish second in the 200 medley relay. Luke Flaherty, Jennings, Smith and Shealy were second in the 200 free relay.

Buchanan added a second-place effort in the 500 freestyle.

The sister tandem of Avery and Gabbi Vester had two of Greenfield’s four first-place showings in the girls’championship.

Gabbi Vester won the 50 freestyle in 30.38, with Avery Vester securing the 100 breaststroke in 1:33.88.

The relay team of Ryann Jennings, Alex Garner, Monica Mann and Ysabella Saldi was first in the 400 free relay, finishing in 5:17.16.

Lilly Hesse, competing unopposed, completed the 100 butterfly in 1:38.82.

Gabbi Vester tacked on a second-place swimin the 100 freestyle, as did two Lady Knight relays. Eliza Bryant, Hesse, Avery Vester and Gabbi Vester were second in the 200 medley relay. Garner, Jennings, Gabby Vester and Sallie Gliarmis were second in the 200 freestyle relay.
