Former Hunt High and East Carolina standout Zach Houchins of the Mobile BayBears was named Double-A Southern League Player of the Week on Monday. Houchins was a 13th-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Angels in 2014.

Former Hunt High and East Carolina University standout Zach Houchins, now an infielder with the Los Angeles Angels’ Double-A affiliate Mobile BayBears, was named Southern League Player of the Week on Monday.
Houchins batted .346 with 12 RBIs over the last seven games. His 34 RBIs on the season leads the BayBears. Houchins blasted a walk-off home run, his fourth homer of the season, to give Mobile a 1-0 victory in 11 innings in game 2 of a doubleheader against Pensacola on Wednesday. He also leads the BayBears in multi-hit and multi-RBI games after producing three and four, respectively, last week.
Houchins, a13th-round pick in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in 2014 right after his senior season at ECU, was named an Angels Organization All-Star by Minor League Baseball in 2016. He hit 18 homers and drove in 84 runs, both highs among Angels minor leaguers, while playing all season for their Advanced-A affiliate, Inland Empire.
