FREMONT — Authorities are seeking the public’s help to solve the killing of former Fremont mayor Andy Evans, whose body was found in a home he owned Saturday afternoon.
Evans died of a gunshot wound and his death is being investigated as a homicide, Maj. Richard Lewis of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said in a Monday news release, citing reports from the state medical examiner’s office. Deputies announced Sunday they had launched an investigation into Evans’ death but had not released any details.
Around 1:20 p.m. Sunday, Floyd Anthony “Andy” Evans’ body was found at 129 Evans Farm Road just outside Fremont near Interstate 795. Deputies described the home as one of Evans’ properties.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Wayne County deputies because Evans is a former elected official.
“To maintain the integrity of the investigation, no further information can be released at this time,” Lewis said in the release.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 919-705-1862 or the SBI tip line at 1-800-334-3000. Tipsters can also call the sheriff’s office at 919-731-1480 during regular business hours.
Witnesses can share information anonymously by calling or sending a text message to Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255 or submitting a tip online at www.p3tips.com. Those who provide information leading to a felony arrest may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
The Fremont Board of Aldermen, which Evans previously led as the town’s mayor, is scheduled to hold its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at Town Hall, 120 E. Main St.
