CARY — Barton College senior Sharon Kiptoo finished sixth out of 96 runners and first among intercollegiate participants in Friday’s Adidas XC Challenge at WakeMed Soccer Park.
She completed the 5-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 49.3 seconds to help the Lady Bulldogs finish sixth out of 11 teams. The only runners ahead of the Kenya native were two club runners and three unattached competitors.
Sophomore Meghan Araldi posted a career-best time of 21:44.8 to place 27th for the Lady Bulldogs, who also got counting scores from freshman Brooke Lonergan (48th, 24:17.9); senior Judith Melly (52nd, 24:56.5) and freshman Andrea Mills (61st, 26:59.9).
Bull City Track Club won the women’s meet with 39 points, edging the North Carolina State University club team with 43. Fayetteville State was third with 101, followed by Meredith College (118), Virginia Wesleyan (146) and Barton (148) to round out the top five.
Freshman Evan Lee paced the Barton men’s cross-country team to a fourth-place finish out of 10 teams.
Lee, a Hunt High product, finished the 5K course in 17:43.6 to finish 38th out of 105 runners. Bulldogs teammates Greg Gibbs and Alex Kelly finished 40th and 43rd, respectively, with times of 17:52.0 and 18:01.9. Sophomore Leslie Jones was 49th in 18:20 while senior Quasim Ray had Barton’s last counting score by coming in 78th with a time of 20:03.2.
Winning the event was the N.C. State club team with 28 points while Virginia Wesleyan was second with 58, followed by Bull City Track Club (60), Barton (133) and Hampden-Sydney (139) to round out the top five.
Both Barton teams will compete in the Bulldog Stampede hosted by Wingate University on Saturday, Sept. 23, which will be the site of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional meet in November.
