ROCKY MOUNT —  Beddingfield High sophomore Annie Greene won two individual events in helping the Lady Bruins finish second at the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference swimming championships Friday, Jan. 18, at Harrison Family YMCA in Rocky Mount.

Greene won the girls 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 24.04 seconds and the 200 individual medley in 2:52.10. SouthWest Edgecombe, which finished third in the girls meet, was paced by Lizzie Johnson, who won the 500 freestyle in 6:45.52 and was second in the 100 backstroke.

Both Greene and Johnson have qualified for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A East Regional, to be held at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center in Raleigh on Friday, Feb. 1.

No other Beddingfield swimmer won an event but Nathan Jenkins placed second in the boys 200 freestyle and was second out of two swimmers in the 100 breaststroke in scoring all four of the Bruins’ points as they finished third.

Nash Central won the boys and girls team titles in the three-team meet while SouthWest Edgecombe was the boys runner-up and third behind Beddingfield in the girls standings.

While the Cougars did not win an event, Daniel Varnell, Lane Hodge, Austin Summerlin and Brayden Mobley all earned points as part of SouthWest’s 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Hodge and Varnell each earned points for the team in individual events as well.

No swimmer from either Beddingfield or SouthWest Edgecombe boys team has qualified for the regional meet.
