MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Barton women’s golf finished a dominant run in the Battle at the Beach on Saturday with the first tournament title in Lady Bulldogs history.

Junior Sydney Turner’s final-round 77 sent her to the medalist honor with a two-round total of 158, finishing five shots ahead of teammate and runner-up Clare McMahon. Barton junior Kelsey Woodall’s final-round 79 propelled into a fourth-place finish at 168, while sophomore Nikki Norlin was sixth with a total of 174.

Barton’s total of 327 on the par-72, 5,591-yard Pine Hills course at Myrtlewood Golf Club was 52 shots better than Alderson Broaddus, second in the six-team field.


Lady Bulldogs complete 4-0 weekend at Shaw Challenge

CARY — Barton swept both foes Saturday to finish 4-0 at the Shaw University Challenge, topping West Virginia St. 7-3 and Bowie St. 14-7. The Lady Bulldogs, now 11-13, ended a three-game slide.

Junior third baseman Jessica Onega was 6 for 7 over both games, extending her hitting streak to five games with at least one run, RBI and extra-base hit in those games. Against WVSU she homered and singled twice while driving in three runs before knocking a double and two singles with two RBIs in the win over Bowie State.

Freshman Kelsey Carroll went 4 for 8 with four RBIs and junior Hannah Jones was 5 for 9 with two RBIs. Jones also went the distance in the pitching circle to get the win against WVSU, allowing just four hits and one earned run.

Freshman Ashton Pegram notched her first career decision in the second game, going 5 1/3 innings against Bowie St., giving up one earned run on six hits.

Barton will play a doubleheader Monday at Fayetteville St.


Bulldogs rally to beat Edinboro 6-3

After losing two of the three doubles matches to visiting Edinboro on Saturday, Barton rallied to claim five of six singles matches and the match 6-3.

Earning singles wins for the Bulldogs (3-5) were Oscar Marmestedt at No. 2, Diego Agudelo at No. 3, Jesus Gil at No. 4, Alessandro Gerbino at No. 5, Hugh Ryder at No. 6. Gil-Agudelo battled to an 8-7 victory at No. 2 doubles for Barton, which will host Chowan on Tuesday.


Lady Bulldogs roll over Edinboro 8-1

Host Barton swept doubles and then won five of the six singles matches to defeat Edinboro in a nonconference match Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs picked up doubles wins from Daria Avram-Marissa Stevenson, Vanessa Sanoja-Ada Vargas and Claudia Capellades-Whitney Hamilton at Nos. 1-3, respectively. 

Avram rallied to pull out win at No. 1 singles in three sets against Edinboro’s Laura Lopez while Sanoja, Stevenson, Vargas and Hamilton each claimed singles wins.
