HARTSVILLE, S.C. — The Barton College women’s soccer team celebrated its first season-opening victory since 2015 with a 2-0 conquest of host Coker College on Thursday.
Junior Rebecca Fraser’s goal in the 30th minute propelled the Lady Bulldogs of the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas. Coker, a former conference rival, was also kicking off its season.
Fraser took a feed from junior Rebekah Beal and eventually beat Lady Cobras goalkeeper Samantha Hoffman.
The second goal came in the 72nd minute. Freshman Brenna Keegan netted the goal on a header that beat Hoffman. Freshman Alexis Ayers notched the assist for her first collegiate point.
Fraser, sophomore Syaani Harris and senior Laisy Scardazzi each fired three shots for Barton. The Lady Bulldogs wound up with 15 shots, including eight on goal.
Coker managed just three shots on frame and six overall.
Junior Barton goalkeeper Megan Bolick posted her third career shutout. Bolick, two saves, repelled a shot by Coker’s Ashley Hogg in the seventh minute and stopped a shot by Georgia Reece in the 80th minute.
The Lady Bulldogs generated opportunities from Harris, Beal, Fraser and senior Jordyn Brown before Keegan delivered the second goal. Freshman Caitlynn Bragg cranked Barton’s first shot in the 26th minute.
Barton continues its five-match trip in Fayetteville against Methodist University at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
