With the Carolina Athletic Association of Schools for Choice’s Triangle Athletic Conference tournament trophy on the line, Wilson Prep Academy varsity girls basketball head coach Ashley Banks turned to her “Triple Threes” to bring home the 61-48 win over Southern Wake Academy on Friday night.
The trio — consisting of senior Jadore Lucas-Barnes, junior Trinity Mobley, and eighth-grader Destiny Ainstead — outscored the Lady Lions (9-12) 54-48. Lucas Barnes and Ainstead both finished with 15 points while Mobley had a game-high 24 points.
“They’re my ‘Triple Threes’ — they stick together like sisters and if you see them around they’re always together,” Banks said. “When you have someone out there that you like or you love, there’s a difference when you out there playing. They play big for me all the time. I can count on them to talk to the girls and push them, so I can push them (Ainstead, Lucas-Barnes and Mobley).”
The Lady Tigers (19-1) completed their 19th straight win of the season in Banks’ first season. Banks said when she took this job, she had no idea if winning a conference championship was possible.
“I didn’t know what I was inheriting, I didn’t know what everybody (in the conference) had and that’s what kept me up a lot of late nights,” Banks said. “I had to familiarize myself with this conference and who we play because I’m not from here. It was always being prepared, prepping them and getting them ready for whatever it is we doing.”
The Lady Tigers will now await to see where they will play in the first round CAASC playoffs, but Banks said whoever and wherever they play she will be up late to prepare her team.
“I got to do my due diligence,” Banks said. “Just making sure I send my coaches out and research the team we’re playing so we can be prepared. I’m a coach that stays up till two, or three o’clock in the morning watching (University of South Carolina women’s head coach) Dawn Staley to make sure we’re prepared.”
