DUNN — Lena Mae Blackwell Brownd, 94, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 at Harnett Woods Healthcare.
Born on Nov. 27, 1922 in Granville County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Bertie Parham Blackwell and wife of the late Elton Elric "Bud" Brownd.
Lena loved her Lord. As a member of Ephesus Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school, missions, studied the Bible and was a prayer warrior for many. Lena was a woman who knew how to do just about everything, but if she didn't, she learned how. She enjoyed quilting (making one for each of her family members), knitting, crocheting, needlework and sewing. She loved to garden, canning and freezing what she grew. She also loved growing flowers, designing floral arrangements, cake decorating, reupholstering furniture and cooking for her family and friends, especially making biscuits and earning the title of "master of boiled custard." She loved music and encouraged her children to sing and play the piano.
Lena was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. Family and friends were her everything. She is lovingly remembered by her five children, Buddy Brownd of Knightdale, Diane Rains of Coppell, Texas, Gail Cogdill and husband, Mike, of Buies Creek, Joan Gibbs and husband, Milo, of Wilson and Cindy Buffaloe and husband, Mickey, of Raleigh. She was affectionately known as "Mom Brownd" by her seven grandchildren, Anthony Brownd, Leslie Gibbs, Jason Cogdill, and wife, Lori, Spencer Gibbs, Joya Austin, and husband, Taylor, Deborah Webb, and husband, David and Rebecca Narron, and husband, Corey; by her nine great-grandchildren, Bruin and Rance Fritscher, Thomas and Hampton Cogdill, Peyton Buffaloe Narron, Caroline and Curtis Webb and Emerson and Bennett Reese Austin. Lena leaves behind her dear youngest sister, Marie Blackwell Lewis and husband, Bill; and many beloved nieces, nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son-in-law, Roger Rains; and by her siblings, Leslie Blackwell, Janie Harris, twin brothers, Elbert and Elwood Blackwell, Doris Bradsher and AJ Blackwell.
Family received friends Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 at Ephesus Baptist Church in the church sanctuary. Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Greg Templin, began at 3 p.m., with graveside services following in the church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Ephesus Baptist Church, 6767 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27606 or the Alzheimer's Association for Research, 3739 National Drive, Raleigh, NC 27612.
