MOREHEAD CITY — Craig Lewis smashed a two-run triple in the bottom of the second inning to put the Morehead City Marlins ahead to stay and send the club to its first Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup championship Friday with a 7-4 victory over the High Point-Thomasville HiToms at Big Rock Stadium.

The Marlins (35-14) won Thursday’s opening game of the best-of-3 series 11-6 in Thomasville to set up the clinching contest.

Lewis, who finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs, slammed a two-run homer to right field off HiToms starter Will Hicks in the first. The HiToms led for the final time on Jacob Whitley’s solo home run and a run-scoring single by Sam Taylor.

But in the second, shortstop Alex Pimentel’s sacrifice fly tied it, and later in the inning, Lewis sent his two-run triple to right field.

The HiToms hit three solo homers, the latter coming on Austin Pharr’s shot to left field. That made it 6-4 Morehead City, but Will Johnson gave the Marlins an insurance run with his infield single that plated pinch runner Riley Campbell.

Lewis and Brendan Dougherty had six of Morehead City’s nine hits. Dougherty was 3 for 4 with a run scored. Seven HiToms had one hit.

Evan Lumbert (3-1) picked up the win for the Marlins, working 5 1/3 innings and giving up six hits. He struck out three and walked two and allowed all three High Point-Thomasville homers. Zach Vennaro pitched a spotless ninth for his second save.

Will Hicks (2-4) was charged with the loss for the HiToms, yielding five runs in two innings. Austin Reich struck out 10 for the HiToms in five innings of middle relief, but his offense could not close the gap.
