Pitchers Ashley Pendergrass and Lindsey Curlings combined for 14 strikeouts in six innings in visiting Elm City’s 12-1 softball rout of Speight on Thursday.
Pendergrass and Curlings also ignited the offense. Pendergrass slammed a triple and double and drove in six runs. Curlings tripled and had an RBI.
The Lady Vikings welcome Springfield at 4:15 p.m. Monday.
Avery’s four goals lead Lady Vikings
Jessica Avery drilled in four goals (hat trick plus one) and contributed an assist as the Elm City girls soccer team evened its record at 1-1 with a 9-0 rout of visiting Speight on Thursday.
Avery netted a goal in the sixth, eighth, 19th and 23 minutes and assisted Parker Barnes’ goal in the 29th minute.
Hannah Mosley opened the Lady Vikings scoring and also knocked in the final goal on an assist from Barnes in the 49th minute.
Akari Nakaya tallied off an assist from Mosley and Reagan Barnes collected a goal off a Mosley assist.
Elm City is the guest of Speingfield on Monday.
Poythress hurls Elm City past Forest Hills
Jordan Poythress struck out 10 hitters in just four innings of work Monday afternoon to lead the Elm City baseball team to a 13-3 conquest of Forest Hills.
Poythress gave up four hits and walked one, with Ethan Williams pitching the fifth and striking out two.
Offensively, Colton Moats led the Vikings with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Ethan Williams homered and reached base three other times via a walk. Moats doubled.
Elm City plays host to West Edgecombe on Monday.
Doubles sweep keys Lake Wilson victory
The Lake Wilson Tennis Club Juniors claimed a 6-3 victory against Red Oak Middle School on the Fike High courts Thursday.
Winning in singles for Lake Wilson were Wesley Owens at No. 1, Snyder Pearson at No. 2 and Collins Pearson at No. 3.
Lake Wilson swept the doubles with triumphs from Owens-Snyder Pearson at No. 1, Jakob Byrne-Collins Pearson at No. 2 and Lawson O’Hara-Mae Pridgen at No. 3.
Comprising the Lake Wilson tennis team are Elm City Middle School students and Lake Wilson junior players. Coming off a season-opening win, Lake Wilson plays host to Greene County Middle next Thursday.
Elm City baseball stops Speight 11-5
The Speight baseball team was handed an 11-5 loss to Elm City on Thursday.
Ethan Turner, Tyler Godwin and Colton Turner each had two hits for the Cougars. Godwin homered.
Tristan Little took the loss on the mound for Speight, working five innings and one earned run. Little struck out five and didn’t record a walk in scattering four hits. Elm City climbed to 2-0.
Speight, playing in its season opener, hosts Toisnot on Monday.
