Zahir Barnes put away three goals Wednesday afternoon, and his hat trick was good enough for the Forest Hills boys soccer team to record a 3-2 win over West Edgecombe in the season opener for both teams.
Head coach Jody Truett cited “excellent collective team defense” from the Bucks.

Vikings rout Cougars to start season
The Elm City volleyball team eased its way to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-12 victory over Speight on Wednesday.
With both teams kicking off their seasons, Kelsey Miller led the Lady Vikings with 13 aces. Avery Lentz tallied five kills and eight assists, while Kameron Millin and Reagan Nelson each had five digs on defense.
Nelson added six aces.
Elm City is the guest of Springfield on Monday.
Chargers suffer first loss after 7 wins
The undefeated streak for the Wilson Christian Academy volleyball team reached seven matches before being handed a three-set loss by the DASH United junior varsity team Wednesday.
The Lady Chargers vaulted to 7-0 with a 25-23, 25-6 conquest of Rocky Mount Academy on Tuesday, but were spilled at home 20-25, 25-22, 15-11 by DASH on Wednesday.
Against Rocky Mount, WCA rallied from an eight-point deficit to win the opening set. Sophia Nesbit served for 17 points, while newcomer Melia Hughes served for four consecutive points. Three of those points were aces.
Against United, the Lady Chargers got 20 service points from Nesbit. Faith Bridgers came off the bench to serve for 10 points, including the clinching point in the opening set.
WCA plays at home at 4 p.m. Friday against Greenville Christian.
