MIDDLE SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Lady Chargers double up East Wake Academy

The Wilson Christian girls soccer team opened its 2019 season Thursday with a 4-2 victory over East Wake Academy.

Brianna Little had two goals for WCA, one in each half. Ava Hazboun and Chloe Villaverde had one goal apiece for the Lady Chargers, with goalkeeper Kate Hoskins compiling four saves.

WCA hosts Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Tuesday.

Elm City sweeps road XC meet 

PINETOPS — Both Elm City cross-country teams secured first-place showings at Tuesday’s Tricounties Athletic Conference at South Edgecombe, with the Elm City boys claiming first place among five teams and the Lady Vikings emerging from a three-team field.

Elm City placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 10 to win the boys event with a team score of 30. 

Toisnot was second with 42 as Rocky Mount Parker (90), Speight (101) and host South Edgecombe (148) followed.

Devin Whitehead won the boys race for Elm City to set the pace, finishing in 11:56. Lavon Dickens followed in third for the Vikings in 12:14.33, while Mason Ross (7th, 13:15.29), Kaleb Artis (9th, 13:22.25) and David Telfer (10th, 13:27.03) rounded out Elm City’s scorers in the 49-runner field.

Toisnot got top-10 runs from Shyquan Baker (4th, 12:53.03), Jacob Castro (5th, 13:05.04) and Zephaniah Edmundson (8th, 13:17.46).

Alex Porto-Reyes finished second in 11:57.43 to lead the way for Speight.

In the girls’ race, Cecelia Johnson of Elm City crossed the line first in 14:57, while being followed by teammates Willa Boyer (15:04.04) and Zoe Mitchell (15:14.32). Emma Spencer (6th, 16:28.51) and Katie Ash (7th, 16:40.38) comprised the scorers for the Lady Vikings, who amassed 19 points.

Speight, led by Shelley Aycock’s fifth-place run in 16:08.56, was second with 51 as South Edgecombe (103) finished a distant third.

Ava Wainwright finished 10th for Speight in the group of 36 competitors, crossing the line in 16:46.34.
