With the aid of just two hits, the Springfield softball team rolled to a 15-0 victory over visiting Speight in three innings Thursday.
Madison Thompson pitched all three innings for the Lady Wildcats, allowing one hit while striking out six.
Kaylin Penny and Victoria Coleman each had two-run singles for Springfield, unbeaten in two games.
Springfield is at South Edgecombe on Monday.
Lake Wilson wins opener at Kinston
KINSTON — The Lake Wilson tennis team traveled to Kinston on Thursday for their its match of the season and emerged with a 8-1 victory.
Snyder Pearson, Hatten Gore, Lawson O’Hara and Ethan Boyette all won their singles matches to give Lake Wilson, comprised of players from Elm City Middle, the clinching points before doubles play. Lake Wilson would sweep the doubles matches with Pearson-Boyette at No. 1, Gore-Griffin Brown at No. 2 and a default win by Lawson O’Hara-Mason Wocher at No. 3.
Kinston presented with just five players, necessitating a pair of defaults. Mason Wocher was the beneficiary of a default at No. 6 singles.
Elm City wins softball opener
Playing in its season opener the Elm City softball team notched a 18-3 victory over South Edgecombe Middle on Thursday.
Pitchers Kelsey Miller and Skylar Summerlin pitched for the Lady Vikings, while Kelsey Miller, Kameron Mullin, and Zoe Varnell led the way offensively.
Elm City will travel to Speight on Monday for its second game.
Lake Wilson will host Greenfield on Tuesday.
Hawks blank Bucks 13-0
Brady Kalamajka allowed just two hits and struck out 10 on Thursday in pitching the distance as the Toisnot baseball team stampeded to a 13-0, four-inning win over Forest Hills.
Elijah Whitley had a grand slam for Toisnot (2-0), while El Avent added a home run as part of a 2-for-3, three-RBI showing.
Joel Breiholz lashed a two-run double.
Toisnot visits Darden on Monday.
Lady Hawks split to open season
The Toisnot softball team opened its 2019 season with a 1-1 showing with a 15-0 victory over Forest Hills on Wednesday and a 17-2 defeat to South Edgecombe on Tuesday afternoon.
Versus Forest Hills, Ruby Gayle Coulter struck out five in a 12-hit outburst, with Jalia Daniels, Laney Jinks, Ann Thorn Webb and Ruby Gaie all having multiple hits.
Versus South Edgecombe, Jess Atkinson, Coulter and Jinks led the way offensively.
Toisnot travels to Darden on Monday.
WPA doubles up Sallie B. Howard 4-2
The Wilson Prep girls soccer team used a hat trick from Lilian Stegall to separate from Sallie B. Howard in a 4-2 victory Thursday afternoon.
Macylee Wiggs had the other goal for the Lady Tigers, who moved to 2-0-1.
Grace Ziegler and Niiyana Edwards tallied assists.
In goal, Emersen Fitch and Makayla Best combined, with Best making two of the duo’s three saves.
The Lady Tigers travel to Rocky Mount Faith Christian next Thursday.
Lady Tigers beat Winterville Charter
WINTERVILLE — Lillian Stegall knocked in six goals for the Wilson Prep girls soccer team Tuesday in a 9-0, mercy-rule shortened win over Winterville Charter.
Grace Ziegler and Niiyana Edwards had one goal each for the Lady Tigers. The ninth tally was of the own-goal variety. Ziegler had three assists, with Emma Etheridge adding another.
