KINSTON — A pair of one-run games got away from the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday as the Down East Wood Ducks completed a three-game sweep of their Carolina League series with a 3-2 victory in the opener following by a 1-0 decision in the finale at Grainger Stadium.

Both games were scheduled for seven innings as the Mudcats fell to 55-48 overall and 16-19 in the second half, falling into last place in the Southern Division. The Wood Ducks climbed to 21-13 in the second half and won their 70th game of the year against 33 losses.

Carolina has now dropped nine straight games to the Wood Ducks.

The Mudcats held a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning of game one and stood just a single out from victory, but yielded a solo home run to J.P. Martinez. In the bottom of the eighth, serving as extra innings, Sam Huff’s walk-off single gave the Wood Duck the victory in the opener.

Josh Altmann’s solo home run in the fourth was all the offense the hosts required as Wood Ducks starter Tim Brennan tossed a complete game. He held the Mudcats to three hits and struck out three.

Carolina’s Noah Zavolas pitched into the seventh of the opening game and was one out away from a complete game of his own before yielding the homer to Martinez. He struck out three and allowed five hits over 6 2/3 innings before yielding to Anthony Bender, who worked just one-third of an inning in absorbing the loss.

The Mudcats plated both of their runs in the first game on Payton Henry’s two-run single.

Carolina continues a six-game roadtrip Friday with the start of its series at the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
