NCHSAA PLAYOFF ROUNDUP: Land’s buzzer-beater 3 sends Wilson Prep to dramatic first-round win over Voyager

DURHAM — Adrian Land drained a long 3-pointer as time expired to advance his Wilson Prep boys basketball team past No. 14-seeded Durham Voyager Academy 59-58 in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs.

Coming off a missed layup on the other end and his team down two, Land, who scored 14 points, knocked down the big shot from near half court to send the 19th-seeded Tigers (18-7), No. 3 from the Tar Roanoke Conference, into the second-round in their first season as NCHSAA members.

In the final quarter, Wilson Prep outscored the North Central Athletic Conference runner-up Vikings (22-7) by 10 after being down by as many as 15 points.

Quay Johnson buoyed the Tigers with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Eric Wynn pitched in 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Wilson Prep will take a road trip to third-seeded East Carteret on Thursday. The Mariners (21-3) coasted past Lejeune 83-56 in the first round.

Ladybirds upset Union Pines 45-43

CAMERON — The Southern Nash girls basketball team made the most of its first playoff game since 2009, upsetting eighth-seeded Union Pines 45-43 in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs on Tuesday night.

The Ladybirds (10-12), the No. 25 seed in the East Region, ended an 11-game win streak for the Vikings.

Jermia Walker led the Ladybirds with 15 points, while Rayna Bailey chipped in 11.

Southern Nash will travel to ninth-seeded Southern Durham on Thursday night for the second round.
