In a field of nearly 100, contenders are plentiful for the Men’s Championship in the annual H.W. Weatherford Memorial/Wilson County Men’s and Women’s Amateur Golf Championship scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Wedgewood Public Golf Course.

And from that group will emerge a new champion as Justin Hayes, Josh Talton and Stephen Harrison, champions from the last three years, are not entered.

Thus, an excellent opportunity exists for “near-miss” category perfomers such as Mark Whitley, Brandon Godwin, Brock Godwin, Lee Fulcher and Mike Sargent.

Not to be overlooked is former winner Kent Williams.

Champions, via 36 holes of stroke-play competition, will be crowned in the Men’s, Women’s, Seniors and Super Seniors divisions.

Wilson Country Club’s Patch Wilkerson will defend her Women’s title, while Doug Barnes of Happy Valley Country Club bids for a repeat in Super Seniors.

Play begins off the No. 1 tee at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tee times are listed on page 3B.
