The games are dwindling down now, but Thursday’s Coastal Plain League game inside Fleming Stadium was certainly one that got away from the Wilson Tobs.

Twice in the ninth inning, Wilson had the Morehead City Marlins down to their final strike with a one-run lead.

But it was all for naught.

Nolan Clenney was hit with a two-out pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game, and the Marlins later plated the winning run in what amounted to a bitter 6-5 defeat for Wilson.

The Tobs fell to 17-36 overall and 8-17 in the second half of the season, while Morehead City moved to 25-26 in all games and 12-11 in the second half.

Jeff Thompson took the loss for Wilson after his Belmont Abbey teammate, Sam Luchansky, started the contest.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Carson McCurdy laced a two-run single to put Wilson on top 2-1.

In the seventh, North Carolina A&T’s Dawnoven Smith, who had two hits, tallied a run-scoring single to put the Tobs up 5-4.

One inning prior, McCurdy and Hunter Gore were responsible for RBI doubles that put the hosts up 4-3.

Stanford’s Will Matthiessen earned his third save in relief for Morehead City.

Wilson, losers of four of its last five games, visit Hicks Field on Friday to face the Edenton Steamers. The Fleming finale is set for Sunday against the Wilmington Sharks before the Tobs close the year at Fayetteville on Monday.
