Ethel Joyner pins a poppy on Wilson Mayor Bruce Rose’s lapel last week. The American Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary Unit 13 will be selling the poppies Thursday through Saturday at K&W Cafeteria, Parker’s Barbecue, Piggly Wiggly on Churchill Avenue, Walmart, Rose’s and Bill’s Barbecue. Poppies are worn in memory of fallen American armed services members and in tribute to disabled veterans. The custom originated following World War I. Legion Auxiliary members ask supporters to wear their poppies with pride through Memorial Day.
