KINSTON — The visiting Wilson American Legion baseball team plated an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning and then hung on for a 7-6 Area I Eastern Division victory against Kinston Post 43 Tuesday night.

The teams tangle again at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Fleming Stadium with Post 13 in possession of a 5-4 division record and 6-4 overall mark.

Wilson ends the regular season with Wednesday night’s game against Kinston, a trip to Ahoskie on Friday and a test against Wayne County in Fleming Stadium on Saturday evening.

In the sixty, Wilson snapped a 4-4 tie with two runs. Dom Gaetano drew a walk and raced home on Justice Lynn’s triple. Tyler Sherrod doubled home Lynn.

After right-handed reliever Jaelynn Melton shut down Post 43 in the bottom of the sixth, Wilson extended its lead to 7-4 with the seventh-inning run.

Parker Garris walked, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored on Alston Pittman’s single.

However, a pair of walks spelled trouble for Melton in the bottom of the seventh. Kinston converted the two walks, a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch into two runs before Melton squelched the uprising by inducing a game-ending fly ball to center fielder Lynn.

Melton picked up his third win without a loss. Pittman and Lynn triggered the Post 13 offense with two hits each.

Trailing 4-0, Kinston struck on a solo home run against Wilson starting pitcher Josh Fuller in the second and forged a 4-4 tie with three runs in the fifth.

Fuller lasted five innings, allowing six hits, four runs (two earned) and no walks while striking out three.
