A costly error and lack of timely hitting dropped sent Wilson American Legion Post 13 to its fourth loss without a win in a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Wayne County Post 11 on Monday night at Fleming Stadium.
The loss was the second one to Post 11(12-4, 5-0 East Division) and the third in Area I East Division play. Post 13 left six runners on base and all of them were in scoring position. The two teams were nearly even in hits, with Post 11 edging out at 7-6. Post 13 head coach Noah Edens said problems getting a timely hit have been a theme early in the season.
“We’re in games and our pitching is doing good and offensively, we’re hitting the ball,” Edens said. “We just aren’t getting the big hit we need. We just didn’t hit the ball in scoring position, made a couple baserunning mistakes and we didn’t get runners over and in.”
Josh Hartsfield picked up the shutout win for Post 11 while striking out four and walking three. Post 13 got a good start from 2018 Hunt High graduate Josh Fuller, who pitched a complete game while giving up three runs, two earned. The unearned run was a routine double-play ball that was missed, loading the bases with one out.
Two batters later, Blake Gipson’s single brought in two Wayne County runs. Case Kermode’s two-out single in the fifth inning to score Clay Matthews was the final run for Post 11.
“Josh (Fuller) got in and threw the ball very well, and we expected that from him,” Edens said. “He kept that team to three runs. If you keep that team to three runs, you’re doing pretty dang on good.”
Post 13 will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting North Raleigh Post 297, which will be Wilson’s last game of the week.
