FARMVILLE — An inability to locate home plate by Wilson Post 13 pitchers proved disastrous in Tuesday’s 17-11 American Legion baseball loss at Farmville Post 151.
It was the Area I East Division opener for Wilson, which dropped to 0-2 overall.
Five Post 13 hurlers walked 13 Farmville batters in the game, a situation exarcerbated by Post 151’s Zach Nicholson, who slugged two grand slams. Wilson scored three runs in the top of the first inning at Farmville Central High but 151 responded with six in the bottom of the inning, including the first slam by Nicholson, a D.H. Conley senior.
Post 13 reclaimed the lead with four runs in the top of the second. The 7-6 tally stood until the bottom of the fourth when Farmville posted five runs and then added five more in the fifth.
“We just couldn’t find the strike zone last night,” groaned Post 13 head coach Noah Edens. “We’ve got to get some guys out there and get them some experience.”
Wilson hitters knocked three homers but, as Edens pointed out, “We hit three home runs with nobody on.”
Dom Gaetano led Post 13 with a 4-for-5 showing, including a homer. Will Stewart was 2 for 3 with a homer and Peyton Bass was 2 for 4 with a home run.
Wilson continues its season-opening road swing with East Division games Thursday against Pitt County Post 39 at Pitt Community College and Friday against Wayne County Post 11 at Wayne Middle/High Academy in Goldsboro.
