Rams top Panthers at Pitt Classic

BETHEL — Despite making five errors against North Pitt in Saturday’s Pitt County Classic Tournament opener, the Greene Central varsity baseball team pulled out a 5-3 win in eight innings Saturday on the Panthers’ diamond.

The 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference Rams evened their record at 8-8 with their second straight extra-inning victory. The 2-A Eastern Plains Conference Panthers dropped to 16-4.

Perry Tingen pitched six innings in relief of starter Trey Fields to get the win, his second against three losses. Tingen allowed one earned run on five hits, a walk and a hit batter.

Zach Taylor led the Rams at the plate with a 2-for-3 showing that included a home run and three RBIs. Debo Pigford was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs while A.J. Dupree had Greene Central’s two other hits.

The Rams return to North Pitt for more Pitt County Classic action Monday to take on Roanoke Rapids at 3 p.m.
