For more than a week out, we heard that Florence was coming straight for the midst of North Carolina as a Category 4 hurricane with massive and devastating winds and rain. We did our best to prepare; gathering batteries, bread, water — if we could find any — cereal and milk; filling our vehicles; but most importantly we did a lot of praying. Praying that God would turn the storm back out to sea.

The closer it came toward us, the more we prayed.

Things weren’t looking good for North Carolina at all. A very bad storm was on her way. Then things began to change. The more news we watched and heard, Hurricane Florence was taking a turn for the lower parts of North Carolina and turning more toward the south. Not only that, but the strength was decreasing. Still a very serious storm, but not as devastating as initially predicted. Finally on Thursday evening and into the night, the storm was upon us.

Thank God, we did not sustain the damage was previously predicted for much of North Carolina, but some of our neighboring counties were hit really hard.

We are a small church located in Zebulon, and we want to do something to bring hope and help to some of the people who lost all they had in Hurricane Florence. We had already scheduled to have a church plate sale to raise funds for our church. We had originally planned it for Sept. 15, but plans were changed for other reasons.

We will be holding the plate sale and instead of raising money for ourselves, we’ll be giving all the proceeds to those who need assistance due to Hurricane Florence.

We are already getting orders and we want to challenge Wilson County residents to meet us at the corner of Black Creek Road and U.S. 301 at the Shell station this Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. We will be selling delicious turkey barbecue and grilled chicken plates with sides and dessert for $7 with one meat and $8 with two meats.

Let’s help make a difference in the lives of families and communities that have been through another storm and lost a whole lot more than we did. For more information or to place an order, call me at 252-363-4006. We will deliver for five or more orders.
