BAILEY — Authorities say sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a gun-wielding man early Saturday in rural Nash County.

Deputies were called to the 1200 block of Maudis Road off Graham Brantley Road northeast of Bailey “regarding a call for service involving a male subject,” Chief Deputy Brandon Medina of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Sheriff Keith Stone told the Rocky Mount Telegram the man was being sought in connection with a reported sexual assault. The sheriff said deputies identified the man’s car and tracked it to his home on Maudis Road.

“When the suspect exited the vehicle, he pulled out an AR-style weapon from the back seat, and my officers had to defend themselves,” Stone told the Telegram.

Three Nash County deputies involved in the incident are on administrative leave, and the State Bureau of Investigation is examining the shooting. Those steps are standard protocol when law enforcement officers discharge weapons while on duty.

“The SBI has the weapon, and we have reviewed body-cam footage and radio traffic at the time of the incident. Everything we have seen so far is consistent with what my deputies are saying,” Stone said, according to the Telegram.

The sheriff’s office did not identify the man killed in the shooting or the three deputies involved Saturday. Stone and his chief deputy called the outcome a tragedy.

“A citizen of our community has lost his life, a family is mourning and our law enforcement agency is deeply saddened as a result of what has happened,” Medina wrote in the release. “Please join us as our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragic incident.”
