ROCKY MOUNT — The SouthWest Edgecombe High varsity football team kept pace with Beddingfield in the battle for the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference lead with a 27-6 conquest of host Nash Central on Monday night.
The encounter was originally scheduled for last Friday but moved to Monday as the result of Nash Central not being in session last Friday because of power outages resulting from Hurricane Michael.
The third consecutive win vaulted the Cougars to 2-0 in the conference and to 6-1 in all games. SouthWest welcomes Farmville Central for a conference clash Friday night. The Bulldogs tumbled to 0-2 in the EPC and to 2-5 overall. Nash Central is the guest of Beddingfield on Friday night.
Against Nash Central, SouthWest, the pick to finish second behind Beddingfield in the preseason coaches poll, piled up 408 yards total offense, including 333 on the ground.
The Cougars of head coach Jonathan Cobb never trailed after taking a 7-0 first-quarter lead. However, SouthWest led only 7-6 at halftime. The Cougars then broke the contest open with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs.
Senior Darntrell Council rushed for a pair of SouthWest TDs, while senior Jareil Collins and junior Cortezz Jones each scored one. Junior Hunter Hopkins kicked three extra points.
Council led the SouthWest running attack with 126 yards on 18 carries, while Collins amassed 97 yards on just six rushes.
Senior quarterback Jayden Lewis connected on 3-of-8 passes for 75 yards and no interceptions. Junioe Keishon Porter hauled in two passes for 50 yards and junior Jaquez Dickens had a 25-yard reception.
Defensively, junior Michael Hussey registered seven solo tackles and six assists. Senior Jelan Smith wound up with six solo stops and five assists, while junior Kedar Darden notched five solo tackles, six assists, an interception and a fumble recovery.
