It is with a heart filled with gratitude that I realize that Wilson County is going to get a new animal shelter.

The animals, who are sometimes referred to as “God’s other children,” are not able to say thank you for this great addition to our community, but we humans can.

Thanks go to so many, including Max and Della Fitz-Gerald, who have lobbied so hard and long for its creation, Commissioner Chris Hill, who made the motion for the needed money to be moved in the Wilson County budget to cover the additional funds required to complete the essential monies, Commissioner Roger Lucas, who chaired the subcommittee on the animal shelter, and all of our Wilson County commissioners who voted for its adoption.

State Sen. Rick Horner requires a special thanks for his efforts in this matter to bring an additional $200,000 to this project from the N.C. General Assembly.

Sheriff Calvin Woodard has made a great impact for the future of the animal shelter and his support for it is to be commended. The Wilson Times has been a great crusader for this project and its leadership is outstanding.

The project is now in the very capable hands of our county manager, Denise Stignale, and I look forward to seeing a completed project in the very near future.
