Steven Bruce Distler of Wilson passed away April 14, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Durham after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 18, 1951 in Long Island, New York to the late Henry and Nadia Distler. Steven grew up in Long Island and attended Berner High School there. His life’s journey took him to Florida, where he lived a number of years, and finally to North Carolina. Steven worked in the construction and AC trades most of his life and was a very proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He loved fishing at the shore, loved his Labrador retrievers, and was an avid Tar Heel fan.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Henry “Butch” Distler.
Surviving Steven are his wife, Lottie Distler of Black Creek; his sister, Nadia Distler Sallas, and her husband, Roger Sallas, of Jacksonville, Florida; his nephew, Jason McKinnon of Jacksonville; a number of cousins; and many special friends.
The family is forever grateful to the friends and neighbors in Wilson who assisted Steven through the years and to the VA staff and doctors who provided for his medical needs
Steven’s wish was to have his remains donated to medical research; this is being fulfilled at Wake Forest University.
Cremation and services will be held at a later date.
