Five students from the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology recently earned a professional industry certification in information technology security.
Matthew Davis, Miguel Bonilla, Joseph Penunuri, Luis Sanjuan-Cruz and Jameson Taylor are now TestOut SecurityPro certified. They earned the certification by scoring high enough on the official TestOut SecurityPro certification exam that is used as their final exam in the security concepts course at Wilson Community College.
To earn the certification, students used TestOut’s LabSim software to learn how to properly secure a network using a layered security model from building a secure network with physical security through data defenses as they would on the job. Students gained experience with multiple operating systems and interfaces including Windows 10, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, iOS, Cisco CLI, Cisco Net Security Appliance and Linux CLI.
With TestOut’s LabSim product, students get a broad range of hands-on experience in a safe, simulated environment through which simulated computer hardware and software presents students with challenging, real-world scenarios to demonstrate the knowledge and skills to be a successful IT security administrator.
The TestOut SecurityPro certification is not a traditional multiple choice exam; it is entirely hands-on. TestOut’s certification exams use the most advanced simulation technology to measure the ability of individuals to perform real-world IT tasks.
“Through their motivation, hard work and passion for learning IT, these students absorbed an enormous amount of information and were able to apply what they learned in specific hands-on skill sets, all within a few months,” said Kendra Faulkner, information technology instructor at Wilson Community College. “I am proud of these students and look forward to their continued success at the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology. Having these outstanding young people in my network security classes has truly been a blessing. They are going to be very successful in their chosen field.”
