Thanks to all who paid tribute on Memorial Day

As chairman of the city of Wilson Committee on Patriotism, again I want to thank The Wilson Times for the outstanding coverage of our Memorial Day program. Your professional and extensive coverage is truly appreciated by the committee and the veterans of Wilson County. We salute you.

I want to recognize two individuals who are behind the scenes, yet without whom our task would be almost impossible. They are the mayor of Wilson, the Honorable C. Bruce Rose, and the city clerk, Ms. Jamie Batts. Your support, Mr. Mayor, and your extensive assistance, Jamie, is so greatly appreciated.

As for our many participants, you all are the program! We can’t thank you enough. The many veterans who complimented this year’s program and everyone’s contributions are overwhelming. We are still getting compliments.

The ceremony was memorable, from the National Anthem sung beautifully by Ms. Sherry Danzy and the patriotic songs sung so powerfully by the Sallie B. Howard School Chorus to the speech by President Douglas Searcy of Barton College, which I think will be in the hearts and minds of veterans in attendance for the rest of our lives. Thank you, sir.

To our patriotic program regulars, you were all professional and awesome as always: Our high school Junior ROTCs, the Wilson County Veterans Honor Guard (21-gun salute and Taps player) and not least our wreath placement ladies. You all continue to make our program successful. I dare not leave out our sound system provider, Mr. Thaddeus Washington of Kingdom Audio and Video. Another great job.

We thank American Legion Post 13 for the catering of our refreshments. We thank the Legion Riders for the motorcycle display. We thank the Wilson Police for their assistance. We thank the city of Wilson Streets Department for your hard work. We thank the city of Wilson Print Services for our programs. And we thank the county of Wilson for our relief stations.

What good is a program without an audience? Thank you, citizens of Wilson, visitors and friends. We veterans appreciate you one and all for your attendance and display of support for all who have served our great nation. God bless us all and God bless America.

Once again, your dedicated city of Wilson Committee on Patriotism: City Councilman Logan Liles, James Arthur Faison, Debra Grover Deaton, F.T. Franks, Morgan Dickerman III, Betty Jean Dixon, Jacqueline Knight, Horace Goff, Edmund N. Costello, ex-officio Eddie M. Price and E. Ray Chambers.

E. Ray Chambers
Chairman, Wilson Committee on Patriotism
