CLAYTON — More than a week after a 15-year-old was fatally shot, sheriff’s deputies are still working to develop a third suspect in the case.
Two teenagers face first-degree murder charges in the July 13 killing and investigators say another person whose identity is not yet known was involved.
Deputies were dispatched to a shooting at 103 Blackthorne Court southwest of Clayton at 1:39 a.m. July 13. When they arrived, deputies found 15-year-old Kaylen Marion Middleton of Clayton dead at the scene due to a gunshot wound.
A 20-year-old, Desmond Tyrese Barnes of Clayton, was shot in the foot. Barnes has been treated and released from the hospital.
Johnston County sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Caldwell said three suspects were described as African American males who fled the scene in a vehicle after the shooting.
Caldwell said detectives identified one of the suspects as 18-year-old Joshua Caleb Draughon of Garner. Draughon was initially booked into the Wake County Jail on unrelated charges and Johnston deputies took him into custody on July 15.
Authorities had announced that 19-year-old Quashaad Powell, who was known to frequent the Garner and Angier areas, was wanted in the killing. Powell surrendered to authorities in Wake County on the afternoon of July 16.
Both Draughon and Powell are charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
The case remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office at 919-989-5010.
