Fike High senior A.J. Gunter qualified for the North Carolina High Athletic Association 3-A East Regional in boys tennis last week, making him this week’s Thomas Law Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week.
A.J. teamed with classmate Walker Gliarmis to finish third in doubles at the 3-A Big East Conference tournament. Playing mostly at No. 4 singles for the Golden Demons, A.J. went 10-4 and had the same record playing mostly No. 2 doubles.
The son of Kelly and Jay Gunter of Wilson, A.J. has a 4.83 weighted GPA and is ranked No. 11 in his senior class at Fike while enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program. He is the senior class president as well as Student Government Association president. A.J. is part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team at Fike as well a member of National Honor Society.
He was a starting offensive linemen for the Demons varsity football team last fall and played basketball his first three years at Fike.
He serves as a youth deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Wilson and on the Wilson Family YMCA’s Junior Board.
A.J. has been accepted into the Honors Program at North Carolina State University, where he plans to major in biology.
