Rogelio Ortiz Flores helped his Beddingfield High varsity boys soccer team to one of the its best seasons in recent memory, making him the Thomas Law Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week.
Rogelio, a sophomore midfielder, and the Bruins upset Washington 1-0 in the first round of the N.C High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs on Saturday. It was Beddingfield’s first state playoff victory since 2011. Rogelio had the Bruins’ lone goal in their 5-1 loss at Clinton in the second round Tuesday.
He finished with seven assists, second most in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference, and six goals as the Bruins posted a 12-5-2 final record for their first winning season since 2013.
The son of Alicia Flores and Enrique Ortiz of Wilson, Rogelio has a 3.6 GPA at Beddingfield, where he takes honors English, math and world history. Rogelio also plays tennis and runs cross-country for the Bruins.
He works part-time for the Wilson Parks and Recreation Department and plays for the Wilson Youth Soccer Explosion ’02 Explosion boys ages U17 team.
