Athletes and coaches representing the area’s best of the best from the current decade were honored at The Wilson Times Best of the Decade winners celebration Saturday evening at Wilson Country Club.

Conducted via online voting at wilsontimes.com, readers nominated their respective choices in 41 different categories and voted on each individual winner.

Nominations were accepted from Sept. 1-25 and the voting process from Times readers took place throughout the month of October.

Aside from individual Best of the Decade awards for players and coaches in each sport, an overall Team of the Decade, Coach of the Decade and Player of the Decade were also announced and
presented.

In addition to the 41 awards presented Saturday, 19 Best of the Decade team awards and 15 salutations for Game of the Decade were also bestowed by voters.

Times staff provided supporting information for Best Game and Team of the Decade in each individual sport.

Players and coaches from each of the 14 high schools in the Times readership area — Beddingfield, Fike, Hunt, Community Christian, Wilson Christian, Greenfield, Wilson Prep, Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf, C.B. Aycock, Greene Central, Southern Nash, SouthWest Edgecombe, North Johnston or Downeast Association for Homeschool Sports (DASH) were eligible for nomination and inclusion.

Athletes that played in his or her sport between Jan. 1, 2010 and the start of the voting period were eligible and readers were allowed to cast one vote every 24 hours.

Sponsors for the event were Wilson Regional Orthopedics, EB Sports and Embroidery and Wilson Flowers & Market.

A special section revealing the names of the winners with accompanying post-event photos will be published in the Wednesday, Dec. 11 edition of the Times.
