The Coastal Plain League summer collegiate baseball’s International Tiebreaker rule, implemented at the start of the current season, victimized the Wilson Tobs again Thursday night in Fleming Stadium.
With the score knotted 2-2 after the regulation nine innings, the Edenton Steamers capitalized on the rule to pour across six runs and seize an 8-2 North Division triumph in 10 innings.
Wilson lost for the third time in four extra-inning games in falling to 9-3 in the second half and 19-17 overall. However, the Tobs remained two games ahead of second-place Peninsula, which lost 6-1 to Holly Springs on Thursday.
Wilson visits Holly Springs on Friday before welcoming Peninsula in Fleming Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday. A suspended game of five innings will be completed, followed by the regulation nine-inning contest.
Against Edenton, the Tobs, behind the pitching of Sean Deely, owned a 2-0 lead until the top of the seventh inning — when the Steamers’ Ben Whetstone slammed a two-run home run.
Edenton’s six-run 10th was highlighted by Devan Gardner’s grand slam against Tobs right-hander closer Luis Acosta. Also in the inning, Whetsone and Anthony Jefferson each singled in a run.
Edenton starting pitcher A.J. Spencer worked seven innings, allowed five hits, two runs and three walks while striking out eight. Nate Gardner pitched the eighth and ninth innings and earned his first win against three losses.
Matt McCourt scored both Wilson runs — on Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice fly in the first and Carson Freeman’s double in the third. McCourt, Kevin McGowan, Ben Faso, Jacob Charron and Nick Smith collected the other Wilson hits.
In going two innings, Acosta suffered his third loss against as many wins. Deely, in six innings, allowed but two hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out five.
