HOLLY SPRINGS — Wilson Tobs right fielder Carson Freeman gunned down Peyton Isaacson at the plate for the final out of Friday’s Coastal Plain League game, allowing the Tobs to escape with a 4-3 win in 10 innings against the host Holly Springs Salamanders.

Isaacson was the runner on second base as the Salamanders loaded the bases with two outs. Third baseman Clemente Inclan rapped a single to right field, scoring Daulton Martin from third before Freeman made his throw to catcher Shamoy Christopher, who tagged Isaacson to end the game.

The half-inning started with Holly Springs sending Earl Semper to second and Martin to first, per international tiebreaker rules. After Angel Zarate laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a base, Tobs pitcher Jared Gallagher intentionally walked Isaacson to set up a force play. That’s exactly what the Tobs got at the plate when Cam Locklear chopped a grounder to Wilson third baseman Colby Warran, who fired the ball to catcher Shamoy Christopher to force out Semper.

The Tobs scored two runs in the top of the 10th as Drew Brooks and Warren were placed on second and first bases, respectively, to start the inning. Brooks scored on a sacrifice fly by Freeman while Warren trotted home on Kevin McGowan’s sac fly.

Gallagher, the fourth Tobs pitcher, went the final 2 1/3 innings for the win in his first decision of the summer. Starting pitcher Gary Watkins worked four innings, giving up an earned run on two hits and three walks while his successor, Cody Smith, fired two hitless innings, walking two and fanning two.

The Tobs scored first in the game when first baseman Ben Faso slammed a one-out double and scored on left fielder Caleb Dean’s single in the top of the second inning against Holly Springs starter Caden O’Brien, who lasted five innings.

After the Salamanders tied the score in the bottom of the third on Zarate’s sacrifice fly, Wilson went back in front in the top of the fourth when Brentan Doyle led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Faso’s sacrifice fly.

The Tobs, now 10-3 in the second half, host the Peninsula Pilots, first-half winners and in second place behind Wilson in the CPL’s North Division, on Saturday in Fleming Stadium. The teams will first complete Tuesday’s suspended game, starting at 6 p.m., with the score tied 1-1 at the top of the sixth inning. The regularly scheduled will follow.
