Tobs hold off SwampDogs for season sweep Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE — The Tobs completed a sweep of their only two 2019 games against the Fayetteville SwampDogs by a 6-5 margin Saturday night.

Wilson, 4-3 in the North Division the second half and 18-14 overall, snapped a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning and then hung on. The tie had existed since the third inning.

In the seventh, the Tobs’ Nick Rose and Michael Calamari each stroked run-scoring singles.

The SwampDogs, who fell to 4-5 in the East Division and 17-18 in all games, got a run back in the eighth, capitalizing upon two walks from Wilson reliever Josh Sieglitz.

C.J. Gonzales, the third Tobs pitcher, survived two singles in the ninth, registering a game-ending strikeout to notch his third save.

After yielding a three-run home run to Carson Bartels in the first inning, Wilson starting pitcher Nick Hollas blanked the SwampDogs the next six innings in evening his record at 2-2. Hollas yielded five hits, allowed no walks and struck out eight.

Wilson took a 2-0 lead in the first when Christian Avant stole home on the back end of a double steal with Jared Carr, and Rose laced an RBI single. In the Tobs’ two-run third, DeShawn Lookout and Calamari each hit RBI doubles.

Calamari wound up 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Carr batted 3 for 5 and scored twice. Rose banged out two hits, drove in two runs and scored twice.

Fayetteville reliever Anthony Ethington took the loss.
