PINEVILLE — The Wilson Youth Soccer Association ‘06 Explosion Ladies were victorious in the first match of pool play in U.S. Youth Soccer Association’s North Carolina State Cup in the 13U Girls division with a 2-0 defeat of Triangle United Soccer Association ‘06 Gold on Saturday, May 4.

The ‘06 Explosion, which finished second in the National League Piedmont Conference this spring, got both goals in the second half of the match at OrthoCarolina Sportsplex. Mariah Polk fought through two defenders for a breakaway goal before Avery Williams finished a pass from Susan Guzman.

Darby Wallig made three saves in goal in the second half to preserve the lead.

“The girls haven’t played a competitive match in a while and it showed in the first 20 minutes after kickoff,” said WYSA head coach Thomas Goines. “We grew into this match as it wore on and, through sheer guts and effort, the ladies found a way to pull out an important win.”

The ‘06 Explosion, in second place in Group B based on goal differential, finishes pool play this weekend at BB&T Sports Park near Winston-Salem. Wilson will take on Charlotte Soccer Association North/Huntersville Elite on Saturday morning at 10:30 before finishing pool play Sunday against Group B leader North Carolina Fusion Triad at 9:45 a.m. Each of the three group winners and one wild-card team will advance to the State Cup semifinals at Gillette Soccer Complex on Saturday, May 18.

‘07 Explosion Ladies finish season

The ‘07 Explosion Ladies hit the road for their final two matches of the N.C. Youth Soccer Spring Classic League’s 12U Girls Second Division East season.

The ‘07 Explosion suffered a 3-0 loss Saturday, May 4, against Fayetteville Soccer Club ‘07 Force at Jordan Park in Fayetteville. However, Wilson rebounded the following day to deliver a 3-0 shutout to host Onslow County Soccer Association ‘07 Coastal Crew Blue at Southwest Soccer Park in Jacksonville.

Wilson only trailed 1-0 at halftime against FSC ‘07 Force but couldn’t capitalize on a pair of chances. Explosion goalkeeper Sarah Peters came up with 14 saves in the loss.

Against OSCA Coastal Crew Blue, the Wilson offense lived up to its nickname as Maddie Brown sparked the scoring explosion by netting all three goals for a hat trick.

Peters made 10 stops in registering the shutout for the Explosion, which finished its season 3-3-3.
